Board of Commissioners Below are answers to questions we hear most often. If there are questions we have left unanswered on this website, please let us know.
The Board of Commissioners is the governing body of Moore County Government. Board members are elected for four year terms. Although Commissioners must reside within a district, they are elected at large by the citizens of all districts. The Board enacts policies such as the overall fiscal policy through its taxing and spending powers, adopt ordinances, known as local laws, and general administration of the County. When do they meet? The Board meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 4:00pm and the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 5:00pm. They also have a work session, as needed, on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 5:00pm. A closed session is the first item on the agenda for each regular Tuesday meeting, thus the open portion of the meeting begins at 5:00pm on the first Tuesday and 6:00pm on the third Tuesday.
Unless specified otherwise, the Board holds their meetings on the 2nd floor of the Historic Courthouse in Carthage, North Carolina.
All meetings of the Board of Commissioners are open to the public.
The Board has a public comment period at the beginning of each meeting. Individuals may sign up to speak thirty minutes prior to the beginning of the meeting. The Chair will individually recognize speakers, who will be given three minutes to make comments. Click here for the public comment period procedures.
The Board appoints citizens to serve on the numerous advisory boards and committees. Click here for an application and a listing of all committees.
